How Do We Prevent Alzheimer’s?
The results are in. If you want to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease, scientists have a take-home message for you: good clean living is meaningful, just not significant.
National Institutes of Health scientists have reviewed the evidence, and determined there is no proof that ANYTHING prevents Alzheimer’s. But there do seem to be some trends, and they may seem familiar to you:
- Good cardiovascular health: avoiding high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty plaques and other components of heart disease will help bypass (no pun intended) a major link to Alzheimer’s.
- Good diet: eating lots of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish or supplements, and potentially following the Mediterranean diet might help. Loading up on vitamins B, E, and C won’t.
- Don’t smoke: this one is a no-brainer. Smoking is a risk factor for too many diseases to count.
- Get your exercise: again, not much thought involved here. Exercise helps ward off most diseases, and can be done virtually anywhere.
As you can see, basically current research has shown just trying to stay generally healthy is your best bet against Alzheimer’s. It’s good to know the usual basic health advice can potentially ward off yet another devastating disease. Just don’t take it to the bank just yet.
