What the heck is participatory medicine? Think of it as patient-physician engagement, where both are equal participating parties. It’s the belief that doctors should want to communicate routinely, collaboratively, and yes, even via technology with patients, and that engaged patients should have a say in their care. Patients have the right to know and pursue their options; doctors seek to create an informed partnership with their patients. It’s inventor Dean Kamen’s dream, and Dave deBronkart and Daniel Sands, MD, are its pioneers.
